How To Measure a Rug Before Getting a Cleaning Quote

Since rug cleaning is priced by area, getting an accurate measurement first means your instant quote will match what you actually pay. Here’s how to measure properly.

What you’ll need

A tape measure (fabric or retractable) and a few minutes. No special tools required.

Step 1: Measure the length

Lay the tape measure along the longest side of the rug, from edge to edge, and record the measurement in metres. If your rug is an unusual shape, measure at its longest point.

Step 2: Measure the width

Do the same across the shortest side, from edge to edge, in metres.

Step 3: Multiply length by width

Multiply your two measurements together to get the area in square metres. For example, a rug measuring 2m by 3m is 2 x 3 = 6m².

What if my rug isn’t a neat rectangle?

For round, oval or irregularly shaped rugs, measure the rug’s longest length and widest width and use those two figures — this gives a reasonable working estimate for pricing purposes.

Measuring more than one rug

If you have multiple rugs, measure each one separately. You can run the calculator more than once, or simply add the areas together before entering a combined figure if you’re getting one overall estimate.

Let the calculator do the maths

You don’t actually need to multiply the numbers yourself — just enter your rug’s length and width into the calculator below, and the area and price are calculated automatically as you type.
